It’s Christmas Eve and I’m home. There are piles and piles of snow outside and my neighbour’s dog is howling in the backyard like he’s being murdered (he’s not). Mom is downstairs putting the tortiere in the oven and Dad is outside shoveling a path for us through the white mountains. I am thankful to be here.
This Christmas season has been tough. A strange jumble of laughter and joy and love and disappointment and anger and doubt and frustration. I don’t know which way is up and I’m having trouble following the star. Somewhere in my depths I know that the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. That there are glad tidings of great joy that will be for all people.
A thrill of hope, the weary world rejoices. For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn.
Let the truth of that shine in our hearts tonight. As we sing carols and eat food and laugh with our families and open presents. God has visited and redeemed his people. He who is mighty has done great things for us. And holy is his name.
